Adaptability
How do you react when things don’t go your way?
I recall when I used to get flustered, anxious, and defensive when things didn’t turn out in my favor. My response to any unwelcome event would generally outweigh the implications of the event itself.
I grew 100x lighter when I learned to manage that feeling.
The circumstances won’t always be in your favor.
But you can actually count on those unfavorable circumstances…
Adaptability is a trait that I attribute much of my success to and it is a trait that I see amongst the high performing individuals that I speak with on Inside the Inspired, they all have an incredible capacity to navigate uncertainty.
While controlling external challenges is beyond our grasp, controlling our reactions to them is not.
Adaptability shapes our response to change and is pivotal both in work and personal settings.
Here are a few reminders that help me commit to adaptability:
Be open to novel ideas and avoid rigid methods. Adaptable individuals anticipate change and remain composed when plans diverge.
Don’t dwell on setbacks, recalibrate expectations to match new realities.
Train your brain to conjure innovative solutions to complex problems. This mental shift fosters a solutions-oriented mindset, allowing you to perceive opportunities amidst difficulties.
Embrace growth opportunities, even if they disrupt routines.
Put your ego aside. By letting go of control, you welcome alternative outcomes.
Avoid stagnation. Create change by exploring new environments and adopting adaptive practices.
In the words of Spencer Johnson, author of "Who Moved My Cheese?" - What would you do if you weren't afraid? Adaptability diminishes anxiety about the future, empowering us to ask this question.
By anticipating change, adjusting attitudes, and resetting expectations, change no longer disorients us, rather it becomes an anticipated component of life's journey.
