How To Add Value

Read time: 3.5 minutes

What does it meant to ‘add value’ in 2024?

Dan Churchill’s audience ranges millions across multiple platforms with a network twice as large featuring high performers and A-List celebrities, like Chris Hemsworth. An executive chef, creator, author, trainer, and more, Dan is as genuine and driven as is credentials hold him out to be. Marathons and ultramarathons, nationally acclaimed TV Shows, performance inspired nutrition, and the list goes on. Dan is widely sought after resource and this episode has been brewing for a while.

3 Key Takeaways from my conversation with Dan Churchill:

1. Value = Problems You Solve: "If you are someone who wants to be in this (creator) space, value add is the most important thing for growth because it doesn't matter how many numbers you have, so many people actually listen to what you say." This concept applies regardless of industry. How you add value to someone ahead of you or aim to have in your circle is about what problems you can solve for that human. There are three ways to add value to someone:

1. Money. Pay for time.

2. Skill. Teach a new skill or improve an existing skill.

3. Attention. Provide a platform to expand the brand or message.

My approach isn’t: “Hey come on my podcast.” My approach is “I’d love to highlight your work (recent book, project, brand, etc.) and introduce you to my growing community.” One new person may potentially buy their book, share the guests message with another potential customer. As the platform grows, so does the value (based on attention). It has to be about what you can do for them. It’s not about you. Find a problem. Solve it. If you focus on value add to your audience, to your guest, or to your dream employer, you can quite literally go viral and connect with anyone you want. In the coming weeks I’m going to outline my personal guest acquisition strategy FOR FREE! (You won’t find this on the Internet), so you too can connect with your ideal audience and guests.

2. Punch a hole in the ceiling. Dan constantly thinks about how he can distinguish his content, lead the field, and “punch a hole in the ceiling.” If you see trends, think how can you uniquely tailor trends to your style of content. Dan gave an example of a cooking show. There’s cooking shows. Then cooking shows specifically for guys learning how to cook a meal for a first date. (Acquisition based content). It’s different. Don’t aimlessly follow the trend or be overbroad. Make it easy for people to understand what you’re about. How do you know if you’re aimlessly following trends? Is your instinct to copy and paste? Each creator I’ve interviewed has the same premise on brand building. Lean into what makes you unique. Test. Experiment. Iterate. Take the feedback. Look at the data. Aim higher for the next one. You’re built different so be different. That is how you ‘go viral.’ (With a strong hook, obviously).

3. Persistence. How do you develop a multi-million dollar network? With persistence. Dan says it clear in this episode: “Because you can have talent, you can be unbelievably talented, and you can get opportunities, but if you don't persist with your talent, with those opportunities, then you know you're not gonna succeed.” You may be the world’s best kept secret. But, it’s on you to show everyone what you’re about and do it consistently, with grace and of course, persistence.

Introducing a new weekly segment!

Weekly Read:

The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene I’ve read this once before, but re-reading is where it’s at. It’s like watching a movie for the second time. You notice new things.

Key takeaway: Authority

How do you develop your authority?

Be authentic to who you are.

“By bringing out a style that is natural to you, you give the impression that it is something beyond you, as if your sense of justice or nose for trends came from your DNA or were a gift from the gods…Without this naturalness you appear manipulative.” The faster you identify your style the faster you learn to hone and lean into your style. Dedicate yourself to earning respect.
